What you can get now
Home Renovation Savings is delivered by Save on Energy and Enbridge Gas. For heat pumps, no home energy assessment is needed. The amount depends on your current heating fuel and the size of the heat pump:
| Your home is heated with | Cold-climate air-source | Ground-source |
|---|---|---|
| Electricity, oil, propane or wood | $1,250 per ton, up to $7,500 | $2,000 per ton, up to $12,000 |
| Natural gas (Enbridge customers) | $500 per ton, up to $2,000 | $3,000 |
Pre-approval is required before installation, through a participating contractor. Source: Home Renovation Savings, checked October 22, 2026.
Air-source rebates are calculated from the heat pump’s rated heating capacity. A 3-ton system in an electrically heated home, for example, works out to $3,750.
How the process works
- Check your eligibility with the short form on the Home Renovation Savings website. It also lists participating HVAC contractors.
- Choose a participating contractor. They help select the unit and submit the pre-installation application for you.
- Wait for written pre-approval. Installations done before approval are not eligible.
- Have the heat pump installed. The contractor then submits the post-installation application.
- Your rebate cheque arrives by mail, usually within 60 days of approval.
Which homes qualify
- Single detached, semi-detached, row houses, townhomes and mobile homes on a permanent foundation.
- You must own the home. Separate rules and amounts apply to rented heat pumps.
- Newly built homes that have been lived in for six months or less do not qualify.
- The heat pump must be an eligible cold-climate model, installed by a participating contractor.
Programs that have closed
You may still see these advertised: the Canada Greener Homes Grant and Enbridge’s Home Efficiency Rebate Plus (HER+). HER+ stopped accepting new applicants on February 5, 2024. Neither is open to new applicants, so be wary of anyone promising money from them.
Avoid these mistakes
- Installing before you have pre-approval. You lose the rebate.
- Hiring a contractor who is not participating in the program.
- Trusting door-to-door sellers who claim to represent the program. The program warns about scammers posing as participating contractors.
Common questions
Can I get the $7,500 rebate if my home is heated with gas?
No. Gas-heated homes qualify for $500 per ton, up to $2,000, on a cold-climate air-source heat pump. The larger amount is for homes heated with electricity, oil, propane or wood.
Do I need an energy audit first?
Not for a heat pump on its own. An energy assessment is only required for the bundled path that combines several upgrades.
